Posted on Thursday Jun 3 1:35:00 BST 2010 Well, its been an eventful few weeks. A resounding victory over Iver Heath was slightly marred by the horrendus injury to Smut. Fortunately its looks like he escaped with just bad bruising and swelling (not that we really know as the stubborn git wouldnt go to hospital) but guess its a reminder of how much keepers are in the firing line. Of course there were the wits who cracked that he should have caught it! But guess we are all thankful that it appears no serious damage was done, after all, some of us recall the injury Monty Ensor of Pyestock suffered when top edging a ball into his face that caused him to lose some of the sight in his left eye. On a pleasing note it was good to see Garsh skippering the side to victory on a day that summer returned to Kempton.
Last week we went to Byfleet, once again this fixture fell on the bank holiday weekend and it meant for the second season in a row we were sending out a makeshift side. But thanks to Pipey and Garsh we were at least able to field 11 players - and thanks to good contributions all round we put up a performance we could be proud of. Young Oscar Finn made his debut and did well in the field, whilst Mark Heran playing his second game for Kings did not shy away from the horrid task of having to bowl at the death. Without Smut, Ming or Windy we had to put 'Watneys' behind the stumps and he did an excellent job...even though he did keep asking to be relieved so he could bowl! It was good to have Joel back in the side, and m'Nig continues to roll back the years with his bowling. On the batting front, without so many regulars it was a putting a lot of pressure on Watneys and Chucky and when we were 30 odd for 3 down it looked like it was going to be all over quite quickly. But cometh the hour cometh the man...well 3 of them actually. The 'colonel' was in excellent form mixing up some hefty blows with some quite superb shots (so much so that he looked good for three figures...and Garsh was promising all sorts of sexual favours if he got there!) - talking of Garsh, I think he played one of his best innings for the club, equally his p.b. with his own solid defence and cheeky little runs. But, and I am sure no one will disagree, the man of the match was clearly Josh Tighe. Superb in the field (he was covered in dirt, scratches and bruises from throwing himself this way and that) he then reluctantly went in at number 6 when the pressure was on but then went on to play the innings of the day, with some superb shots which certainly his father had never taught him. Eventually dismissed for 37 it was a innings of real maturity from one so young, above all else it was a pleasure to watch!
The other great thing on sunday was the excellent team spirit - everyone gave their all, and we never let our heads drop (other than when Pipey realised his bat was broken!!) and given the list of people unavailable I think it was an oustanding effort
This week sees us take on Strollers, again the team is short of many of our regulars but if we adopt the same approach then who knows whats possible - a centry from the 'Colonel# maybe fifty from Josh???
Skip Posted on Thursday May 13 12:51:00 BST 2010 Sorry guys, its been a while...
So the season has got underway and whats been the story so far? Well, it was great to get back together with all the boys at Headley on the first game of the season, but what a horrid performance we turned out - our lowest score for several years eventually meant that the whole game was over by the time the first innings should have been declared! Worse thing was the home team bowlers were nothing special we just adopted a far too aggressive approach - but hey sh*t happens. The following week it lashed it down so we our first home game was washed out (for the second season in a row poor old Gardeners suffered from the weather). Last week it was good to go up against Pyestock again after a few years break. The game was played on a difficult pitch at Aldershot CC as Pyestock's was being relaid. Thanks to some down to some good batting from Borg - with the first fifty of the season - saw us post a good score for the conditions (just 7 runs short of the 180 I had hoped for) and then M'Nig rolled back the years with some superb bowling to knock over the top order from which the Pyestock boys never recovered. Perspex and Ash then got vital wickets before Jae rolled through the rest. I have to say that the game was played in an excellent atmosphere, and that the horrid cold grey day...and the farce with the safe that would not unlock were all forgotten in what was a pleasing win!
This weeks sees us take on Surrey Cryptics - new opponents for us, and hopefully our first game at Kempton this year - by all accounts the pitch is playing really well this year so the bowlers could be faced with quite a challenge!
