KINGS CC vs IVER HEATH CCKINGS CRUISE TO EASY VICTORY DESPITE SMITH INJURY
KINGS CC vs. IVER HEATH CC
Sunday 23rd May 2010
Kings won by 5 wickts
Kings played against new side Iver Heath on a glorious sunny day (the hottest day of the year so far).
Bygrave standing in for Young as captain lost the toss and Kings were elected to bowl first.
Kings opening pair of Sones & Inwood started well with the former being his usual miserly self. In the first 6 overs a rising delivery from Inwood left their No.2 SEYMOUR with a wrist injury. He valiantly fought on for a few deliveries but had to retire early as a result. In the 9th over Sones picked up the wicket of opener TERRY for (11) with Tighe taking the catch after earlier shelling a chance from the same bowler.
Inwood was given a rest as the pitch was not a lively as the previous week. Pipe was introduced and picked up a wicket in his first over having their no.4 HIRSCHFELD caught behind by Smith. TAYLOR was bowled by Pipe for (3) in his next over and Iver were struggling at 41-3.
The score moved onto 47 when Kings were further rewarded as Tighe also picked up a wicket in his first over,
MITCHELL dismissed for (2) caught by Warne with a sharp effort at Silly Mid Off. At this stage Sones had completed his 8 overs for just 10 runs, whilst Pipe had taken 2-14 off 4.
Bygrave brought himself into the attack and it was at this stage that their batsmen accelerated the run-rate.
Although they were not scoring heavily, the score was pushed to 93 before CHANDRAPAT was caught by Inwood for (17) off the bowling of Warne. Kings were now under a little pressure and were dropping regulation catches.
Tighe, Mears, Smith, Blissett & especially Warne were guilty of such atrocities.
Ferris & Bussen were batting well and the former made a good half-century. Then Bygrave induced a top edge from Bussen which Smith took full in the cheek. It was immediately evident that his injury would force him to leave the field as he looked like a mixture of Golom & John Merrick. Inwood donned the gloves as a result and did a very decent job deputising for Smith. Kings were down to 10 men for the last 9 overs before Young (12th man) helped out for 4 overs at the end.
FERRIS "unluckily" was next to depart for (65) when Pipe tipped the ball onto the stumps at the non strikers end.
BUSSEN was next to depart for (14) with some good glove work by Inwood stumping from Warne's bowling. 142-7
Bussen can count himself lucky to not have been given out plumb LBW on a couple of occasions. The 8th wicket partnership picked up a further 29 runs to elevate their final score to 171-7 off their alloted 40 overs.
This was a decent effort when you consider the heat played a major part in some lazy catching and fielding.
Kings reply saw them make swift inroad into their target as some wayward bowling from both openers saw 26 runs on the board after just two overs and the total was up to 38-0 by the end of the 4th over. Both MILLER and WARNE was quick to punish anything short and wide but when MILLER drove another loose delivery he was superbly caught in the covers (38-1). WARNE and MELLIGAN continued to make good, and swift progress and saw the score to 81 before WARNE was bowled by TAYLOR (81-2). TAYLOR struck again when he had MELLIGAN adjudged leg before (116-3). Then when MEARS was stumped and BLISSETT was dismissed without scoring Kings stumbled to 141-5. Yet some superb hitting from INWOOD and PIPE, the former making a quick fire fifty saw cross the finishing line by the end of the 20th over.
