A GREAT DAYE IN COOKHAM
COOKHAM DEAN CC vs KINGS CC
(Cookham Dean won the toss and elected to bowl. Won by 14 runs)
Kings visited the picturesque ground of Cookham Dean on a cool and cloudy afternoon and were asked to bat first on a dry, white and hard pitch that looked like it would be ideal for batting. Having to bat first suited Kings as 3 players had been delayed due to Paul Nangle having put the wrong fuel in his car..a fate James Melligan and Simon Pipe had also done before! Kings also gave a debut to South African Pat Daye. Kings made a watchful start against some sharp bowling from Rob Mettler, however the expected bounce from the taller Jones did not materialise and both batsman had to be wary of balls that scuttled along the deck. Perry was soon into his stride with some well taken singles as well as using the pace of Mettler to pick up boundaries at 3rd man. Meanwhile Miller was still struggling with his timing and was content playing a supporting role. The experienced opening pair seemed to be settlling down nicely as they closed in on another fifty partnership but then Mettler squeezed one through Miller defence (43-1). Worse to follow though, as Perry went to pull a ball that did not get up as expected and he was bowled off his pads for 28 (46-2). When Melligan went without scoring, becoming Jones' second victim Kings were wobbling at 52-3. However Joel Miah and Paul Nangle started to settle the ship, Nangle getting off the mark with a 5, followed by a flurry of boundaries. Miah was also playing well and it was a surprise when both fell in quick succession, Nangle bowled for 29 (93-4) and Miah caught at 1st slip (93-5). The innings hung in the balance now and Simon Pipe and Jaemie Gale had to dig deep to ensure no more wickets fell quickly, however the scoring rate suffered accordingly. Slowley they started to get the upper hand and move the scoreboard along again, but once again as a partnership got started so it was ended. This time it was Gale who was taken at 1st slip (120-6), this brought in debutant Daye to the crease. If the innings needed a scoring injection it was just about to get it. Daye immediately went on the attack, scoring off every ball he faced in hitting 21 off just 7 balls. Unfortunately as his attacking vein continued he holed out to mid wicket (155-7). This set the innings up for Pipe, who supported by Smith and Young, went on the attack to take Kings closer to the 200 mark. When Pipe was last out in the last over he had made an excellent 45 and taken Kings to 185 all out

At tea the score looked to be between 15-20 runs below par, but an excellent opening maiden from Miah, followed by a good over from Melligan gave Kings the start they wanted and when Miah bowled Castleden (10-1) and Melligan did the same to Austin (14-2) Kings were on a roll. Some resistance followed from Mettler and Cutting as they saw out the highly impressive Miah and took their chances against Melligan. Both bowlers were rested with overs in hand and Daye and Pipe were brought into the attack. Both looked threatening but both batsmen were prepared to play their shots. Then Daye nipped one back to bowl Cutting (58-3) and then Mettler was trapped leg before as Daye claimed his second wicket (75-4). There then followed a solid partnership between Poustie and Churchill, both of whom played very watchfully and without much intent. Gale replace Daye, so as to keep some overs in the bank, whilst Pipe continued to strive without success. Churchill's long vigal, without scoring, came to an end when he turned a ball from Gale into the leg side to be caught by Young (98-5). Anderson joined Poustie and he upped the rate as he looked to get after the bowling, he was joined by his partner as the home team strove to regain the momentum. Gale struck again when he trapped Poustie leg before (113-6) but then Jones came in and using his height took to the bowling with gusto. He crashed boundaries down the ground off Pipe and square of the wicket of Gale in getting the home team back in the hunt. With Pipe having bowled out Kings juggled the bowling to try and stop the batsmen settling. Miah returned to bowl one his remaining two overs and served up a maiden, Melligan and Daye then had single overs as well, before Melligan took the vital wicket of Jones, Pipe taking a well judged catch on the boundary (162-7). Soon after Daye replaced Gale and he struck immediately when bowling Anderson (168-8) With overs now running out Miah came back to finish his spell and took the wicket of Partridge (168-9) and it was left to Daye to bowl the final over to secure an excellent win for Kings. Miah was outstanding with the ball taking 2 for 8 off his 8 overs, but for his explosive 21 and his 3 for 22 the day very much belonged to Pat!
